Twitter is an internet company providing microblogging and social networking service headquartered in California, USA.

Twitter enables users to send posts of up to 140 characters,  known as “tweets” via the internet and SMS. Twitter has spawned a number of tweet tools and increased the popularity of URL shorteners.

Twitter was created by Jack Dorsey and launched in July in 2006.  Twitter has quickly become popular, reporting over 300 million users as of 2011, generating over 300 million tweets and handling over 1.6 billion search queries per day.  It is sometimes described as “the SMS of the Internet.”

Twitter Inc., is based in San Francisco, and maintains data facilities and offices in Boston, New York City, and San Antonio.
